Meine liebe Annionetta !
Fast alles ausverkauft, was gute Ware ist.
Was Du wohl inzwischen so eines anderen kurzen Brief bekommest???

Tuttavia voi laggiù li sentite come familiari.
A mio caro fratello va abbastanza bene e ti manda i suoi saluti.
Gertrud
I miei genitori mandano anch’essi molti saluti.

Untersteinleiter, 21 May 1943
My dear Annionetta,
I have received your dear long letter and I thank you, dear Annionetta, with all my heart. I was so very happy about it, because it was so long and above all so rich in content. Many thanks as well for the little picture you enclosed.
I was very glad about your good news, that you and all your dear ones are still well and that you have remained completely spared from the dreadful air raids. Yet, if I am to confess honestly, even though I am not usually a fearful person, this time I was truly very worried until we received a sign of life from you. The English cruelties that seem to have been unleashed upon every paradise show how that bestial people of England vent their rage; and woe betide us, then not much will remain. In Africa, unfortunately, there has been an unmanly beginning, something to which we were not accustomed. But a people that is strong enough to win such great victories must also be able to endure such counter-blows. We too bear them with bravery and courage and do not doubt the final victory for a single second. What is truly painful is only how many people will not return; that will probably remain a riddle that weighs heavily on the heart. Each of those who have fallen feels to us like a relative or a close acquaintance. And you over there feel them all as family. Today many no longer receive any news at all. I am only so very glad, dear Annionetta, that your dear father was not over there, and above all that you yourself, together with all your loved ones, are safe. Now let us look trustfully toward the future.
Your dear lines, Annionetta, lead me completely back into the sea of memories of home. I now see one thing after another more clearly. Even hope allows my sadness to fade a little. I was pleased that you sent me such good information about my brother. Yet I must confess to you openly and honestly that since then I have not been able to get much further. Lately things have been dreadful here: every day was filled right up into the night. You can imagine, dear Annionetta, that neither eyes nor brain wished to function any longer. We had many visitors and also much other work. In between there were also some small joys. On the day of the decoration, later on I had to think about all that I wanted to write to you. Then Mrs. Major Schulz was promoted, which was also a reason to celebrate. Later Gaudenz and Klötz came from your area, rather late. A few days ago Gaudenz arrived with two pleasant wounded officers who had just come from the front. They belong to the company of Lieutenant Colonel Schulz. They brought greetings and of course had to tell Mrs. Schulz everything about how their husbands were doing; so they stayed up all night and no one slept. Naturally, when one compares this with other days, it is different, but one must take the beautiful joys when they come. For if one does not laugh now, when will one? The most beautiful youth passes away so uselessly otherwise. One of them had previously received extended leave together with the German Cross in Gold. In the meantime our work had to rest until the following days. And then again work, always work — there is nothing else to do but work and fall in line. One cannot see it otherwise; only the thought of the soldiers keeps one upright.
Now you may perhaps understand, Annionetta, why things are not so easy for me. If I had not fallen ill, I could have studied and filled my entire inner time that way; now I must simply endure the year. I laugh, but that is actually wrong. My dear father also says things that unfortunately are not Italian — otherwise everything would be much easier. My greatest hope I place in peace; then everything will be different, and above all when I can someday come to Italy. There it will surely be best to learn. Still, I intend to take time for it even from 1944 onward, even late at night, is that not so? My dear brother is doing quite well and sends you his greetings. I should also mention that on the 15th of June he will be going on leave — you can imagine our joy; it is very great.
Regarding the items: it is very kind of you, dear Annionetta, but you know, I think that other compatriots also do not have everything they would like, and so I console myself with that thought. If it were possible for you, however, to obtain a black leather handbag for me, I would be a thousand times grateful to you. Here it is almost hopeless to get anything leather anymore. I am happy to pay any price. I have received some clothing items, and I would so very much like to have such a bag. But truly only if it is possible for you. I rack my brains about how it could even get here. Please write to me how I should send you the expenses. I am very surprised that there are still so many things available where you are that are no longer to be had here in Germany. Almost everything of good quality is sold out. I would so gladly have wanted a beautiful fabric for an afternoon or long evening dress, but unfortunately nothing can be done. Yet one day things must change again. I have sometimes paid absurd prices even for small things, but to obtain the handbag at all would already mean so much to me. It is terribly embarrassing to me, dear Annionetta, because I do not know at all how I could repay you, since there is hardly anything left here anymore. In peacetime, however, I shall make up for it: then you must absolutely come to us, and I will try to read every wish from your eyes and fulfill it at once. So please be sensible about the bag — if it does not work, then do not do it. I do not want you to have any trouble; it could also be another color if black cannot be obtained. Please write to me whether I should send you the amount immediately, and how. But only arrange it if it truly causes you no trouble, dear Annionetta.
Dear Annionetta, how gladly I would send you a large Easter card; I would have enclosed it, but now I truly do not know what to do. Perhaps in the meantime you have received another short letter? This time I myself became brief in writing, but next time I will make up for it. I will also write in Italian then. Hopefully not too badly.
To you, dear Annionetta, and to your esteemed parents, together with my own parents I wish all the very best, and I hope you will continue to be spared from the dreadful air raids.
With this I send you, dearest Annionetta, my warmest greetings, and I look forward to the next little bouquet of lilac with you, and remain always
your faithful friend,
Gertrud
My parents also send their warm greetings.
P.S. I do not really believe that your letter was corrected so very much. You write very well even on your own. For you are a clever lady.
